FEATURED PROJECTS
The base nodes each weigh over 4,000-pounds and brace the structure against wind, seismic, and blast loading. The design of the cast steel column base also ensures the component will provide a 2-hour fire resistance rating without the need for intumescent coating of the casting. CAST CONNEX Universal Pin Connectors™ + Architectural Tapers™ were also used in the AESS frames and trusses.
The mezzanine of the West Gate Expansion features architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) roof trusses. CAST CONNEX pre-engineered Universal Pin Connector (UPC) and custom designed cast steel nodes were utilized throughout the geometrically complex roof truss system to enhance the architectural character of the truss connections, improve the structural integrity of the slender connections, and reduce complex steel fabrication and erection.
The venue's exosphere, the world's largest spherical structure rising 366-feet from its base and measuring approximately 520-feet at its equator, incorporated 368 nodes ranging in weight from 1.6 to 7.2-tons each.
CAST CONNEX Universal Pin Connectors™ (UPC), were instrumental in bringing the structural vision to life. Our 24-in. outer diameter UPC-24.00 finish both ends of the sloped columns that rise above the striking new podium at PENN 2, which has redefined the building's iconic façade.
WHY WORK WITH STEEL CASTINGS?
- Solutions
- Benefits
-
AESS Applications
To address architecturally exposed structural steel connections, particularly for structures comprised of HSS or timber
-
Complex Connections
To simplify complex geometry, address arduous loading, and provide increased connection strength and/or stiffness.
-
Structural Requirements
To improve specific structural requirements, which include improving performance at fatigue-critical connections.
-
Seismic Applications
To enhance performance and simplify design in seismic applications
-
Material optimization
Cast steel structural components can be designed to offer material savings over their fabricated counterparts.
-
Enhanced strength and stiffness
Castings are well-suited for arduously loaded structural connections, where elevated strength or stiffness may be required.
-
Improved fatigue life
Utilizing cast nodes in the most crucial connections of a structure can substantially prolong the service life of the entire structure.
-
Simplified fabrication
Castings can be used to eliminate complex or heavy weldments and can therefore offer risk reduction and quality improvement to contractors and their clients.
-
Improved constructability
Bottom line: castings reduce risk in the field and often provide total installed cost savings.
-
Aesthetics
Castings enhance the aesthetic appeal of architecturally exposed structural steel in projects of any size and budget.
"I could speak to all the features you can pack in your product: survey-ability, tolerance, and geometry setting strength, optimized flow for weight reduction, etc..."
